Life is a continuous journey of navigation and discovery, and one thing I have learned since turning 30 is that there is no one method, recipe or series of steps to follow to discover one’s passion and calling. As a young professional in business, I found that the pathway changes constantly as I continue to grow and evolve.
In my early years in business, I tried to be like other leaders I looked up to, but that never seemed to work. I learned that I had to cherish my uniqueness in order to move closer to the direction God has called me toward.
Even though I was young, I was privileged with senior leadership opportunities in the aviation industry. Along with the wins came struggles and challenges. Being a person of faith did not necessarily make it any easier, but a Scripture passage that has always stood out to me is Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (NIV).
Growing up near San Francisco International Airport, I developed a passion for aviation, and my goal was to become an airline pilot. I quickly realized that I would not be able to achieve this due to the cost of flight training while at the same time pursuing a college education. It was difficult to come to the realization that my dream would not come true.
Instead, I had to trust God that He had greater plans for me, and He took me on a journey through my 20s that I never would have imagined. I thought having God in my life would make the journey of life easier. Instead, it became harder, and I learned that faith is not an easy path, and that it includes both mountaintops and valleys.
There were times I started defining myself based on what I was doing in business because I was in privileged leadership positions that came with power, prestige and popularity. However, being in those positions at such a young age did not provide any fulfillment. I was seeking fulfillment in the world and not in God, and it was only through my faith that I was able to find fulfillment.
Society tells us where to go, what to pursue, whom to compare ourselves to and the way we should live. The questions that matter most are, What is the life you want to live? and What do you want to pursue? Yes, the journey may not be easy, but it provides happiness, and you cannot take that journey without God by your side.
So what are you working toward? What are you doing to navigate and discover your own life journey? It’s time to cherish your uniqueness and write your own story.
